Building spiral horn loudspeakers! ('Sphirals')
My friend Matt and I have been planning to build some spiral horn loudspeakers. The design that fired our imagination is called the Cornu SpiralHorn, which you can see here.
These speakers look like 'audio picture frames' - they hang on the wall and have a nice print on the front to disguise them. We are aiming to build two sets, one about 600mm square and the second 900mm square (both will be approx 150mm thin). We have named our speakers 'Sphirals'.
We've been researching how to do this and we've had great support from the people at FullRangeDriver.com. We have decided to use the Fostex 108EZ driver which we imported from Madisound.com in the US. We are not using crossovers!
Recently we did some prototyping in wood. People said you can't cut a spiral in wood without CNC, but we proved otherwise. Imagine a router attached to a compass! We learned the importance of good quality router bits. See the attached pictures for the story...
